lyrics

I'm Grace Robinson, I was born in 1906 and I came to Ashford when I was 5.

Me father was a gardener at Rookery House on the Duke's drive. And we lived there until me dad died - then we had to get out.

This lady that me dad worked for was very high church and she had a certain seat and no-one could go in that seat and she had a son and he got killed in the war. And she had a plaque put up in church. Alan Tinsley. You'll most like see it if you go in the church.

If I was on the street I had to curtsy, it didn't matter where I was I had to curtsy to her. And me brothers had to raise their hats. Anyway, one day I didn't do it 'cos I was mad.Me mother had been grumbling at me or something and I was sulking. She went home and told me mother that I hadn't curtsied and the next time she sees me I have to do it. And I thought well next time I see her I shall dodge her, many times I dodged her.

The old barnilllock was a beautiful walk. And everywhere was covered with forget-me-nots, primroses, cowslips, beautiful it was a really lovely walk. You know every Sunday me dad used to take us on there.

I'd be 9 when me father died and of course I used to cry like anything. I've got a good character, I've a very good character wherever you go they all know Mrs Robinson.
